A protest rally was held in front of the British Parliament in London, organized by the UK chapter of the Bangladesh Awami League, condemning the arrest of the Speaker of the National Parliament, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, and opposing moves to ban the party in the national parliament.
Leaders of the UK Awami League, members of its affiliated organizations, and central leaders of the Sheikh Hasina Sangram Parishad took part in the demonstration. Speakers at the rally described such actions against political parties and state institutions as unacceptable, stressing that expatriate Bangladeshis stand united in protest to uphold democratic continuity.
Among those present were former ministers Abdur Rahman, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, S M Rezaul Karim, and Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury. Also addressing the gathering were UK Awami League President Alhaj Jalal Uddin and General Secretary Syed Sajedur Rahman Faruk, along with other leaders.
Central Joint General Secretary of Sheikh Hasina Sangram Parishad, Md. Mahabub Alam, and Information Affairs Secretary Md. Anwarul Islam, among others, were also present at the event.
In their speeches, the leaders urged all expatriate Bangladeshis to remain united in upholding democracy, the constitution, and the spirit of the Liberation War. They demanded the immediate release of the Speaker and called for an end to obstacles against political activities.
The rally concluded with slogans and demonstrations, drawing significant attention in and around the British Parliament area.
